A few years ago when the topic of a match between Golovkin and Canelo came up most people were quick to choose Golovkin as the favorite. In 2017 with the fight a mere few days away, a matchup that was once seen as favored for Golovkin is now an even fight. It is apparent that much like the Mayweather Pacquiao fight, Golden Boy Promotions marinated this fight enough till it benefited their fighter. Canelo has been on an uprise since his knockout victory over Amir Khan, defeating the likes of James Kirkland, Liam Smith and most recently Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. The 27 year old fighter from Jalisco, Mexico has looked more impressive in each bout.
While his opponent Gennady Golovkin on the other hand has been on somewhat of a decline. At age 35 many are beginning to question if Golovkin is still that same knockout monster who was tearing through the middleweight division since arriving to the U.S. In his recent bouts with Kell Brook and Daniel Jacobs, Golovkin showed signs of vulnerability which surprised a lot of the boxing world who became accustomed to his knockout successes. His victory over Kell Brook was still decided by a TKO with GGG breaking Brook’s eye socket. But Brook was the much smaller man who still found moments of success by outboxing GGG for as long as he was able to.
Daniel Jacobs took a similar approach in his fight with GGG by jabbing and moving which caused a lot of frustration for Golovkin. Gennady who landed the cleaner punches and also scored a knockdown, won a razor thin decision over Daniel Jacobs. The results of this fight is what ultimately leads us to the speculation of this weekend. The matchup between GGG and Canelo has become far more intriguing than it would have been 2 years ago. Although it is fair to say that this fight should have happened after Canelo’s victory over Miguel Cotto, the build up for this bout makes it all the more special.
When these two fighters step into the ring September 16th 2017, many questions that have been on a lot of fans minds will be answered. Is Canelo really the historic fighter that his promotion team has made him out to be? Or has his career been carefully calculated fighting the right opponents at the right times with little risk and great reward? Will Canelo be able to handle Golovkin’s power at middleweight, or will he be dropped for the first time in his career? As for GGG, is father time truly catching up to him, Or is he still that same fighter bringing a big drama show to the middleweight division? One thing is for certain, both these fighters need each other to receive validation from the boxing world and most importantly for their legacy.
