As many expected this past Saturday on Showtime Boxing Shawn Porter was victorious in his welterweight bout with Andre Berto. The fight was very physical with many head clashes that seemed to dictate the pace of the fight. There were breaks made for the headbutts but no actual warnings or point deductions by the referee. This was rather odd to me but regardless Shawn Porter still did what he had to do and won by TKO in the 10th round. At this stage in his career Andre Berto is not up to par to be competitive with the younger welterweights in the division. Regardless Berto still fought with a lot of heart as he always does but it still was not enough to slow down the barrage of punches coming from “Showtime” Shawn Porter.
So what’s next for Porter? This win has earned him the position to be the mandatory challenger for WBC Welterweight champion Keith “One Time” Thurman. The two have fought before in a very exciting back and forth brawl. In the end Keith’s superior boxing skills proved to be the difference maker for the judges ringside. Did Shawn’s performance in his win against Berto showcase anything that would build a demand for an immediate rematch with Keith Thurman? Probably not. Don’t get me wrong it is a very exciting fight any time of the year but probably not ideal at the moment. Many observers draw more interest to seeing Keith Thurman defend his title against the winner of Brook vs. Spence. This would narrow down who the true number one welterweight in the world is in the present day. Unless Manny Pacquiao decides to take the risk and fight for the throne but at this stage in his career, Manny does not need to prove himself.
Given Keith Thurman’s demeanor in the post fight interview to Porter vs. Berto, it does not seem like he’s in a rush to defend his title against a top level opponent. This is understandable given Thurman’s grind to reach his current A-side status. I anticipate Thurman to take a tune up fight later this year against a mid level opponent, then defend his title against Porter early next year. After that is through I expect him to fight the winner of the Kell Brook Errol Spence Jr. fight sometime in the summer of 2018. As for Porter, he could possibly eye a match with former WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia which would definitely be an explosive fight.
