Was Gennady Golovkin exposed? This has been highly debated since his narrow victory over middleweight contender Daniel Jacobs. So was the reigning middleweight champion of the world exposed? The simple answer is, no. Were his weaknesses exploited by the best opponent he has faced his entire career? The obvious answer is yes. After over 20 knockouts victories in a row for the first time ever Gennady Golovkin actually looked beatable. Despite that fact, he is not the first fighter in the history of boxing to win a close fight. There is a bright spotlight that the public places over GGG every time he steps into the ring. The same kind of light that was placed on Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. during their eras. Expectations are always insanely high and when those expectations are not being met, the public goes into a frenzy.
For the first time to our viewing pleasure, a GGG fight did not end in a knockout. A lot of people are overlooking the circumstances. Daniel Jacobs did not make the IBF weigh in the day of the fight, forfeiting his chance to compete for the title. He gave up this opportunity in order to add on more weight for the bout. So essentially Gennady Golovkin was in the ring with a blown up Daniel Jacobs who looked like a Light-Heavyweight. Whether or not this played a huge factor into GGG not being able to knock out Jacobs is up for debate. As GGG does in all his fights he stuck with his “mexican style” approach of walking down his opponent to win the fight.
Jacobs was able to display what could very well be the blueprint to stopping the Golovkin freight train. That blueprint is simply to outbox him for 12 rounds. Easier said than done and ultimately GGG was able to squeak away with the victory mainly due to the knockdown in the fight. After seeing Golovkin’s performance in his bout with Jacobs, it leaves you to wonder if he is still the favorite against Canelo like he was prior to this fight. The thought also comes to mind of what kind of success GGG would have if he moved up in weight to face the undefeated Andre Ward. Although many questions arose from this fight with Jacobs, there is still the undeniable truth. Gennady Golovkin is still the undisputed Middleweight Champion of the world. Close fights happen all the time, it is not controversial, it is just boxing.
